Vehicles Driving in the Wrong Direction to be Seized for Six Months; Strict Action Against Reckless Drivers – Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar
The Pune Traffic Department has decided to seize vehicles found driving in the wrong direction for six months to instill discipline among drivers. Despite efforts to maintain order, many drivers continue to violate traffic rules with the attitude, “I’ll pay the fine but won’t change.” The department has launched a campaign against violations such as triple riding, drunk driving, and driving in the wrong direction. In the past 15 days, the traffic police have taken action against around 25,000 offenders.
Pune’s traffic police operate in two shifts with 850 officers, yet traffic congestion remains a daily problem due to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads, and narrow streets. Fast driving and repeated traffic violations have led to an increase in accidents, claiming the lives of one to two individuals daily. Many others suffer severe or minor injuries. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has emphasized that strict action will be taken against irresponsible drivers to curb these issues.
Ban on Heavy Vehicles During Peak Hours
The city is undergoing significant construction and development work, with dumpers and concrete mixers operating throughout the day. These heavy vehicles have been involved in several accidents. To reduce such risks, heavy vehicles will be restricted during peak morning and evening hours.
