Mahavitaran Abhay Scheme Offers Opportunity to Clear Electricity Bill Arrears
Pune, October 4 (PCB) – To resolve the current issue of electricity bill arrears, the Mahavitaran Abhay Scheme, which offers a complete waiver on interest and late fees, is receiving a good response. The scheme is available from September 1 to November 30, which means there are only 57 days left to take advantage of this waiver.
Due to outstanding dues, the interest and late fees on electricity bills will continue to increase, leading to permanent disruption of power supply in certain areas. Even if the ownership of a property changes, the outstanding electricity bills must still be settled. According to a ruling by the Honorable Supreme Court, even if the ownership of a property with outstanding dues changes, the new owner or occupant is still liable to pay the outstanding amount. If power supply is needed again in such cases, the entire outstanding amount must be settled first.
However, until March 31, 2024, Mahavitaran is providing a special opportunity through the Abhay Scheme to clear outstanding dues for properties with permanently disrupted power supply. Under this scheme, 100% of the interest and late fees on the total outstanding amount will be waived, and only the principal outstanding dues need to be paid. This Abhay Scheme applies to all residential, commercial, industrial, and other electricity consumers, excluding agricultural and public water supply schemes. Notably, if the principal outstanding amount is paid in a lump sum, low-tension customers will receive an additional 10% discount, while high-tension customers will get a 5% discount. Alternatively, consumers can pay 30% of the principal outstanding amount initially and the remaining 70% in six interest-free installments. There is also an option for new power connections as per demand. This opportunity is also available to customers in Mahavitaran's franchise areas.
For properties with permanently disrupted power supply, the old outstanding electricity bills will need to be settled as per regulations for future electricity usage. Therefore, whether there is an immediate need for electricity or not, it is urged that consumers with outstanding dues take advantage of the Abhay Scheme to become free from their current electricity bill arrears, said Pune Regional Director Mr. Bhujang Khandare.
So far, 9,698 customers in Western Maharashtra have registered for the Abhay Scheme. This includes 4,617 from Pune district, 455 from Satara, 1,439 from Solapur, 1,102 from Kolhapur, and 2,085 from Sangli. If these customers settle their principal dues, a total of ₹3.24 crores in interest and late fees will be waived. Among the participating 4,115 electricity consumers, many have prioritized clearing their outstanding dues and noted that they do not need new power connections, while the remaining 5,583 customers have indicated that they will be seeking new connections. Notably, 9,316 (96%) participating customers have preferred to pay their arrears in a lump sum, which will entitle them to additional discounts on their principal dues.
